Home videos, birthday parties and holidays, are just some of the uses hand-held digital cameras have today. They are compact and convenient, ideal for taking to a wedding party or your friend's theatre show. This natural yet distorted form of filming is even used in big blockbuster films. What films use this technique and why is it so effective?
Sherlock Holmes, Rock and Rolla, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Social network, all used digital equipment rather than the traditional film based equipment. Even George Lucas used digital film making equipment and claimed it would bring about a revolution because it would make film production very cheap. One low budget film is the thrilling documentary style Blair Witch project, which uses the hand held camera effect to add tension and make it seem more realistic. It is a tense horror film which sees a group of students venturing into the woods to seek the witch, which legend says haunts the forest, but this film is not for the faint hearted. It is full of jumpy moments. If you are a fan of scary films or enjoy feeling thrills and tension from haunted house roller-coasters or even just the thrills and tension you get from playing Partypoker, then you are sure to enjoy this film. So how does the hand held effect add fear and tension to the Blair Witch Project?
Using a hand held camera only allows you to see what the characters in the film are seeing too. When there is movement or noise in the bushes, the characters panic, as does the audience who become drawn into the tense moment. This contrasts to many films where the audience knows what is coming or what is about to happen. Sometimes the audience can see a small part of the creature or they are shown whereabouts the creature is, making it less scary as they can predict what will happen next. In addition, the heavy breathing of the character holding the camera makes the situation more lifelike and realistic. This technique attempts to make the audience feel like they are part of the group of teenagers.
The fact that it is filmed in a home video style, makes the audience feel like it is real or it really did happen. It is casual filming which you could believe was taken from a real event, compared to special effects you know are not real, therefore do not believe as easily.
